The City of East Orange is set to host its annual Skate Jam event at Memorial Skate Park on Saturday, September 14, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will showcase vibrant new murals created by teen artists as part of the Mayor’s Summer Experience Work Program (SWEP).
The murals, which capture the dynamic spirit of skateboard culture, were created by local students Julia Thomas, Lay’elle Johnson, Ashley Brown, and Jayson Cheek under the guidance of Cristina Wulff, an instructor from Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts.
They were also assisted by artist Elina Rosenblum, who works out of Manufacturer’s Village in East Orange.
The colorful artwork was first designed digitally before being painted onto the skate park’s slopes.
“I am so proud of our young people. They were empowered to think creatively and enhance the park with their art,” said Mayor Ted Green.
“This skate park, with its proximity to train stations, has become a safe and convenient hub for skate enthusiasts across the region.”
In addition to the mural unveiling, attendees can enjoy live demos, music, refreshments, and custom skateboard giveaways provided by Curtis Grayson Fine Art.
The event is sponsored by Mayor Ted Green, the East Orange City Council, and the Department of Policy, Planning, and Development, with support from local skateboard brands including Hue Skateboards, NJ Skate Shop, and Subject Skate Co.
The Skate Jam is free and open to the public, and everyone is welcome to celebrate East Orange's creativity and skate culture.
The event will take place at Memorial Skate Park, located behind the East Orange Public Library at 21 S. Arlington Avenue.
