A major infrastructure project aimed at upgrading East Orange’s aging gas system is progressing as crews work to replace more than 10.6 miles of outdated cast iron gas pipes, according to a statement released by Eastern City Issues.
The PSE&G Gas Main Replacement Project, which began in October 2024, is expected to continue through the fall of 2025, when the final road resurfacing will be completed.
The project will replace approximately 2,600 old pipes with more durable, modern materials, ensuring improved safety and long-term reliability for residents and businesses.

Mayor Ted R. Green emphasized that this initiative aligns with his administration’s broader commitment to upgrading East Orange’s infrastructure.
“Under my administration, we have successfully milled and paved 9.95 miles of city roads, significantly improving safety and travel conditions for our residents and visitors,” Mayor Green said.
“By investing in these critical upgrades, we are not only enhancing the quality of life for our community but also boosting the local economy and creating new job opportunities.”
Construction crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the possibility of Saturday and evening work as needed.
City officials advise that road closures, detours, and traffic delays may occur during construction. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to follow posted detour signs and adhere to all “No Parking” notices, which will be put in place 24 to 48 hours before work begins on each street.
As part of the upgrade, PSE&G technicians will coordinate directly with homeowners to connect service lines and gas meters to the new main pipeline.
Residents should anticipate temporary gas service interruptions lasting two to four hours during this process.
Those living on impacted streets should have already received detailed information about the project.
