Early Morning Newark Crime Spree Ends in Police Shooting in Irvington

An early morning crime spree that occurred in Newark's North Ward which included a gas station, ended in a hail of gunfire when officers from the NJ State Police fired several rounds at the suspect who attempted to run them over with the vehicle. 

The suspected vehicle,  carjacked early Sunday morning, was observed by officers in the area of South 20th Street and 18th Ave. at around 10 a.m.

When officers attempted to question the driver, the suspect, (identified as 31-year-old Steve Montgomery) then attempted to run the officers over. Officers then fired several rounds striking Montgomery who then fled in the vehicle with officers in pursuit. '

The vehicle came to a crashing halt at Nye Ave. and Grove Street a short time later where officers pulled injured Montgomery from the vehicle. 

Montgomery was taken to University Hospital where he suffered non-life threatening condition. One other person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The incident is under investigation.
