Newark police are investigating an early morning shooting near KIPP Rise Charter School, formerly St. Rocco’s School, in the city’s West Ward after shell casings were recovered at the scene.
According to preliminary reports, a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire around 4:19 a.m. Saturday near Ashland and 14th Avenue.
When officers arrived, they discovered shell casings and secured the area with police tape.

Despite an extensive search, no victims were found at the scene.
However, local hospitals, including University Hospital, were alerted to be on the lookout for potential walk-in gunshot victims.
The suspect fled before authorities arrived, and no arrests have been reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
