Early Morning Fire Damages Two Buildings in Newark

About a dozen familes were evacuated from two buildings after fire broke out in one of the structures then extended to the other early Tuesday morning in Newark.

According to preliminary reports, firefighters responded to calls of a fire that broke out in a building located in the 100 block of North 11th Street at approximately 3:05 a.m.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find thick smoke and heavy flames coming from the rear of a three-story wood framed multi-family house according to preliminary reports.

Officials struck a second alarm for manpower when they observed flames began to extend to a home next door.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire in less than an hour with a search of both buildings for trapped and injured occupant coming back negative.

Officials say damage was done to several apartments and 12 families -29 occupants- were temporarily displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
