The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a shooting that involved an off-duty police officer that occurred at his home in Manville.
According to preliminary reports, at around midnight, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the area of North 5th Avenue and Knopf Street.
Arriving police officers focused their attention on a house that is reportedly owned by a policeman who fired a shot, striking a male suspect who reportedly attempted to break into his home.
EMS transported the suspect - who was shot in the chest - to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick in an unknown condition.
There are no reports of injuries to the officer.
The incident is under investigation.
