City and county authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer in Newark's South Ward overnight.
Details regarding the shooting are continuing to develop, but according to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of Wainwright Street and Lyons Avenue at around 1 a.m. where they arrived to find a person suffering a gunshot wound at that location. There was a second crime scene near 180 Fabyan Avenue where police believe the shooting originated.
During an investigation, it was revealed that an off-duty police officer was involved in a shooting incident with at least two armed robbery suspects.
At least one person was transported to University Hospital in Newark suffering severe injuries.
Police are looking for one suspect that fled the scene in a small dark car northbound on Fabian Place.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
There were no serious injuries reported for the officer.
