Off-Duty Irvington Cop Shoots at Possible Robbery Suspect in Newark

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a police involved shooting.

At approximately 2:26 am today a 39-year-old off-duty Irvington Police officer was in the vicinity of Stuyvesant Avenue and Abinger Place in Newark in his private vehicle when he spotted someone driving his daughter’s stolen Jeep. The officer pulls across from the suspects and they jump out of the car and fled. 

As the officer was checking on the vehicle, a male approached him. The two exchanged gun shots. No one was injured. Evidence was found at the scene indicating the actor or actors were armed and opened fire.

At this time no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. The investigation, which is being handled by the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, is active and ongoing. Addition information will be released when it becomes available.
