An off-duty Jersey City firefighter doing inspections in the area saw smoke coming from a Randolph Avenue home and without hesitation entered the home to rescue a trapped 4-year-old girl.
According to officials, Louis Colon, was working as a fire inspector this afternoon when he noticed smoke coming from 135 Randolph Avenue shortly before 1 p.m.
As he arrived to the home, Officer Ruben Munoz who was first at the scene, made an attempt to reach the third floor but was unsuccessful due to the heavy smoke inside the residence. Colon, without any protective gear, entered the home and rescued the girl from the third-floor of the home.
The child, her father, Colon and a Jersey City police officer were all transported to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for smoke inhalation.
According to officials, all of the other residents managed to escape through a back door unharmed.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
