Newark authorities are actively investigating a violent carjacking that led to a police pursuit spanning multiple cities early Tuesday morning.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, officers responded at approximately 2:57 a.m. on Tuesday to the 400 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard after receiving reports that a man had been assaulted and his gray Chevy Malibu stolen.
Later that morning, at 9:36 a.m., police spotted the stolen vehicle near the Delancey Street exit of Routes 1 & 9.
When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to comply, initiating a pursuit that extended into Jersey City.
The chase came to an end at 9:48 a.m. when the suspect drove the wrong way down a one-way street and was stopped at Clinton Avenue and Sackett Street.
Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the suspect’s identity or whether any arrests have been made.
The investigation remains ongoing.
