The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a suspicious fire that tragically claimed the lives of two young girls in Newark’s South Ward late last night.
Authorities have yet to release detailed information, but according to a preliminary investigation, emergency responders were called just before midnight to a fire at 26 Eckert Avenue.
Firefighters arrived to find flames rapidly consuming the three-story, siding-framed home. Upon learning that individuals were trapped inside, crews quickly began working to extinguish the blaze and rescue those in danger.
Three children were reportedly trapped in the house.
While firefighters successfully rescued one, two others, girls aged 6 and 8, tragically perished in the fire.
An aunt of the victims told RLS Media that the family had migrated to the United States two years ago from Ecuador.
Additionally, an adult was transported to the hospital with burn injuries. Several others also suffered injuries in the fire.
The American Red Cross told RLS Media they assisted the displaced family, which includes less than a dozen people.
Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of arson, but the exact cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

La Cruz Roja Americana informó a RLS Media que brindaron asistencia a la familia desplazada, que incluye a menos de una docena de personas.
Las autoridades están investigando la posibilidad de que se trate de un incendio provocado, aunque la causa exacta sigue bajo investigación activa.
