Essex County Officials will handle the investigation into a crash that killed one person on a highway on the Newark-Elizabeth border Saturday morning.
According to a brief preliminary statement released by authorities, the crash happened in the northbound lanes of Route 1&9 just before 7:25 a.m.
Police say Newark emergency responders arrived and found a pickup truck collided with a car causing severe injuries at that location.
Officials said an unidentified person was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.
Police are trying to determine if one of the cars was going the wrong way on the highway causing the head-on crash.
The official cause is under investigation.
Elizabeth Police said they assisted in traffic control.
