Police in Hillside closed a section of Route 22 while detectives investigated a pedestrian strike with severe injuries reported.
A preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 6:35 p.m., police responded to reports of an injured person in the eastbound lanes.
When officers arrived, they found an unidentified, unconscious and unresponsive person lying in the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived and provided CPR to the victim while police diverted traffic on the highway.
The extent of the victim's injuries are reported as "grave" at this time.
Expect heavy delays on Route 22.
