DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Police Involved Shooting Reported in Newark's West Ward

Early morning gunfire that erupted in the Newark's West Ward has authorities investigating a reported law enforcement officer firing their weapon.

Details are developing but according to preliminary reports, shortly before 5:30 a.m. residents in the area of Lindsley Avenue and Crown Street called police after hearing shots fired outside an apartment building at that location.

Arriving police were met by an off-duty law enforcement officer who reported firing shots at an unidentified suspect for an unknown reason.

There were no injuries reported, and police took one person into custody.

The incident remains under investigation.

UPDATE 6:44am The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will handle the investigation. There were NO injuries.
