Newark Police officials say The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into the death of a child that occurred early Monday morning in Newark's South Ward.
According to preliminary reports, police were called to a residence in the 50's block of Weequahic Avenue at approximately 7:30 a.m. to investigate reports of an unconscious and unresponsive child at that location.
Upon arrival, medical personnel and EMT's were engaged in life-saving techniques to revive the 7-year-old boy.
The unidentified boy was rushed to an area hospital where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later according to officials.
There is no official word if a suspect is being sought and the circumstances/manner behind the child's death has not been confirmed by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office as of 10:45 a.m.
