DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Armed Carjacking Results in Police Involved Shooting Near IHOP in Newark

There are NO injuries confirmed in a shots fired incident that reportedly had a police officer discharge his weapon this afternoon on a street in Newark during a carjacking.

Our staff are awaiting public information from Newark and Essex County officials, but this what we have confirmed, at approximately 1:05 p.m. near the IHOP on Bergen Street, male suspects attempted a carjacking that somehow resulted in a law enforcement officer firing shots at the suspect.

Police have three crime scenes established with one being as far away as Norfolk and South Orange Avenue near the ShopRite.

We can not immediately confirm what police department the officer belongs to at this time.

The incident has been turned over to officials at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office who will lead the investigation.
