If you are in the area of South 20th Street and Springfield Avenue, you are seeing a crime scene established for a shooting that has a man suffering life threatening injuries after gunfire rang out in the area a short time ago.
Police responded to the area at around 11:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting when they arrived to find the unconscious and unresponsive victim laying on the ground struck multiple times.
The victim is en route to University Hospital at this time.
You are going to want to avoid the area for the investigation. The shooting is appearing to be a Newark Police jurisdiction shooting, but this has not been confirmed at this time.
The motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.
UPDATE 1:42pm The Essex County Prosecutor's Office have confirmed a homicide investigation with additional information to come later today.
