The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating possible foul play after a man was found dead Friday morning in Newark’s Ironbound section.
Around 7 a.m., Newark Police were dispatched to the Magazine Street side of the Seabras Supermarket complex, formerly the Pathmark Supermarket, after receiving reports of an unconscious man.
Upon arrival, officers discovered county homicide detectives already on the scene, having found the man inside an outside doorway on the side of the complex.
Thomas Fennelly, Chief Assistant Prosecutor at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, confirmed to RLS Media that the adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.
The homicide task force is leading the active and ongoing investigation.
Residents onnthe normally quiet street reported seeing the man in the area before but did not know him personally.
“Those doorways are places where ‘residents without addresses’ sleep and use as living quarters”, residents told RLS Media.
Chief Fennelly has not released the manner or cause of death at this time.
