DEVELOPING IRVINGTON TOWNSHIP NJ: Fatal Car Crash Under Investigation in Irvington

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is looking into a crash that left at least one person dead on a street in Irvington Township Sunday morning.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Thomas Fennelly said in a statement to RLS Metro Breaking News that the crash happened in the vicinity of Clinton Avenue and Springfield Avenue where multiple cars collided causing a male to lose his life at approximately 1:20 a.m.

Family and friends identified the victim as Mr. Eric Smith, 43, of Newark who is survived by a wife and four children.

According to preliminary reports, Mr. Smith vehicle collided with the other vehicle near the intersection causing him to be ejected from the car he was occupying.

Residents on Clinton Avenue told our overnight field reporters that the sound of the collision was horrific and that they knew that there were severe injuries without even leaving the house.

"The impact of the crash had one car end up on Clinton Avenue by Flex Furniture Store and the other vehicle was on Springfield Avenue by Young World Store, but they had Clinton to Nye avenues taped off."

Chief Fennelly would not confirm or release specific details regarding the crash but would only say the investigation is active and ongoing.

There were no other injuries reported.
