NJ Transit Police are investigating a crash that involved a light-rail train and a car in Jersey City early Thursday morning.
According to a statement released to RLS Media by NJ Transit officials, at approximately 1:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a crash near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Virginia Avenue.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found a severely damaged vehicle that collided with an NJ Transit Light Rail train.
The train traveled from the West Side Avenue station and was headed to Liberty State Park with no passengers on board.
NJ Transit officials said the impact of the crash caused two sections of the Light Rail vehicle to lift up on the platform, resulting in significant damage to the light rail train.
Officials said the unidentified driver of the car was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and remain in an unknown condition.
According to the statement provided by NJ Transit, the light rail operator suffered injuries and received medical attention. His injuries were not reported as life-threatening.
Officials suspended light rail service at the Garfield and West Side avenues stations for the cleanup and investigation. Service is expected to remain suspended through Thursday morning, officials said.
According to NJ Transit, an alternate bus service has been provided that will transport passengers to and from Liberty State Park at Garfield, Martin Luther King, and West Side Avenue stations.
The cause of the crash has not been released at this time.
