Fire officials in Newark along with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are on the scene of a fire with fatal injuries reported at this time in Newark's West Ward.
According to preliminary reports, firefighters responded to 425 Sanford Avenue after several calls came in reporting fire inside the large structure with possible trapped occupants at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Firefighters rushed out of their nearby firehouse and into the St. Mary's Villa Senior Apartments where they found an unconscious and unresponsive person at that location.
Emergency crews provided unsuccessful life-saving techniques on the unidentified victim. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no other serious injuries reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
