Police are on the scene investigating a double shooting incident with one person dead at this time in Newark's Central Ward.
According to police, at approximately 4:05 p.m., shooters fired several rounds of gunfire in the area of Avon Avenue and South 18th Street.
Officers arrive and found multiple shell casings and two victims struck by bullets at that location.
One of the victims was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting while EMS transported the other victim to University Hospital for treatment.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is on the scene handling the investigation.
Police say the suspect fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle with Pennsylvania licenses plates. Residents said the suspects were accompanied by subjects in a black car that fled towards Bergen Street.
