There is an active crime scene underway in Belleville as police investigate a shooting that involved a police officer at this time.
Details are still developing but according to a spokesperson for the Essex County Posecutor's Office, shortly before 5:30 p.m., police were called to the 300 block Joralemon Street for an unspecified incident where at least one police officer fired his weapon at a male, striking him.
The victim was rushed to an area hospital where his injuries are non-fatal the spokesperson said.
According to residents in the area, the house where the incident occurred (376) has had incidents where police were involved in the past.
Several children were removed from the house including handicapped children but not injured.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
UPDATE FROM PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE 9:50 p.m.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray has announced that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Critical Incident Response Team is investigating a police involved shooting earlier tonight in Belleville, NJ.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. at a residence in the 300 block of Joralemon Street.
No police officers were injured but one male suspect suffered a gunshot wound.
The suspect is currently in serious condition at University Hospital in Newark.
As per established protocol, the Prosecutor's Office investigates all police involved shootings.
This investigation is active and ongoing.
