New deputy chief, six new police captains and nine provisional police lieutenants were promoted today during a public ceremony.
Officials say the ceremony was held at Saint Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, 91 Pulaski Street, in Newark today.
According to authorities, Captain Jose A. Gonzalez, former 2nd Precinct Commander, was sworn-in as Deputy Chief. Newark Police Division members who took their oaths to the rank of Captain are: Lee Douglas III, Michele MacPhee, Rory Murphy, Anthony Rawa, Matthew Ruane and John Zutic.
Police Division members who rose to the rank of Provisional Police Lieutenant are: Miguel Aviles, Maria Bastos, James Byrd, Rosa Carter, Beatrice Golden, Deidre Gully, Levi Holmes, Emanuel Miranda and Sean Powell.
“The addition of these new supervisors underscores the progress we are making in replenishing the Newark Police Division,” Mayor Baraka said. “These seasoned leaders will offer best practices-guidance to assist in the ongoing development of our city’s newer police officers.”
“I am proud to welcome these bright law enforcement leaders to the rank of Captain, Deputy Chief and Provisional Lieutenant,” Director Ambrose said. “I look forward to their contributions in keeping the City of Newark safe and in continuing our work towards strengthening community relations.”
