Authorities in Essex County are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a man near West Side Park in Newark on Saturday evening.
A violent overnight began with this deadly shooting, marking the start of multiple gunfire incidents that erupted through the early morning hours across several communities around Newark.
In this incident, Newark Police responded to the vicinity of 606 South 13th Street, just off 18th Avenue, after a resident reported hearing gunfire in the area around 9:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a male victim lying on the street near the park's football and soccer fields, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Medics pronounced the man dead shortly after their arrival. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation, which remains active and ongoing.
As of now, the victim's identity has been confirmed, and no arrests have been reported.
Police continue to secure the area and are appealing for any information that may assist in their investigation.
