A late-night crash on Route 1&9 in Elizabeth resulted in fatal injuries, prompting an extensive investigation by Elizabeth Police, who advised the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday near 853 Spring Street (Route 1&9 North).
Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a severely injured man in the roadway, suffering from a head injury.
Despite efforts to render aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial reports suggest there may have been a second victim seriously injured in the accident, although the extent of those injuries has not yet been confirmed.
Traffic was halted in both directions as police and emergency crews attended to the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates the fatality may have involved a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
Route 1&9 was closed until approximately 2:30 a.m. as authorities conducted their investigation, which remains active and ongoing.
