The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched a homicide investigation following a fatal shooting in Newark's South Ward on Saturday morning.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of South 17th Street and Madison Avenue.
Upon arrival, they discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
The individual was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation.
At this time, no suspect information has been released, and the motive for the shooting remains undetermined.
