Chinese Delivery Man Robbed at Gunpoint in Hillside; One Suspect in Custody

Hillside

Police in Hillside quickly apprehended one of two suspects accused of robbing a delivery man at gunpoint Thursday night.

Hillside police received a report of an armed robbery of a Chinese food delivery person in the area of 1284 Myrtle Street at approximately 9:30 p.m.

At the scene, police learned that the 56-year-old delivery man was robbed at gunpoint by two black males as he was delivering food.

According to the victim, as he was approaching the home, he observed a person coming from the driveway of 1284 Myrtle Street but shortly after a second suspect approached him wearing a mask and brandishing a handgun.

The armed suspect said "give me your money" while pointing the gun at the victim.

At this time, a vehicle traveling on Myrtle Street scared off the two subjects who snatched the food the man was supposed to deliver and ran south toward Silver Avenue.

The investigation on scene, determined that the resident answering the door at 1284 Myrtle Street never ordered any food.

Hillside police patrolmen and detectives worked cohesively on a detailed investigation to find the subjects responsible for the crime.

Within a very short time, police officers located and arrested Mikal Jones, 18, of Hillside, after a short foot chase.

According to police, a black handgun was found inside a small fannypack that Jones was wearing during his arrest.

Detectives are following leads to apprehend the second suspect.

Jones has been charged with obstructing the administration of law, 2nd degree robbery, possession of a handgun, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

He is being held at Hillside police headquarters awaiting transport to the Union County Jail. Jones' bail has been set at $100,000.
