As the clock strikes 10:57 a.m., the official start of summer arrives, but Newark and the North Jersey region will experience a rather unusual weather pattern.
Instead of the expected warmth and sunshine, residents will be greeted by a chilly day reminiscent of early spring. The weather forecast predicts mostly cloudy skies and temperatures that will leave one reaching for a light jacket.
According to The National Weather Service, with a high temperature peaking near 74 degrees, the day will feel significantly cooler than anticipated for the first day of summer.
Northeast winds of 11 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 18 mph, will add to the coolness in the air.
While today will remain dry, it is advised to make the most of the day before Thursday arrives. NWS meteorologists say the forecast for Thursday is less promising, as rain is expected to move into the area.
The humidity level will be around 73%, contributing to a slight sense of moisture in the air. However, NWS forecasters say the overall atmospheric conditions will remain stable, indicated by a barometer reading of 30.23.
The mostly cloudy skies will limit the amount of sunshine throughout the day, adding to the cooler feel.
So, grab your light jacket, make the most of the dry weather, and prepare for a shift in conditions as rain approaches on Thursday.
