A tanker truck that reportedly leaked Ethyl Acrylate closed a Linden road this afternoon.
According to officials, the Linden firefighters stationed at Firehouse #4 reported a strange odor in the area at approximately 2:15 p.m.
Responding officers located evidence that led them to believe the odor was related to an unknown substance on the roadway.
NJDOT was notified and was able to provide specific information regarding a tanker truck that left a Bayonne Terminal and was reportedly leaking Ethyl Acrylate, a chemical used to refine and process materials such as rubbers and plastics.
Officers located the truck at Linden Bulk Transport Company, located at 4200 Tremley Point Road.
An investigation led by Union County Hazmat crews determined that a liquid form of the chemical spilled from a vapor relief valve on the truck.
An inspection of the vehicle showed no physical damage or leak anywhere on the vehicle.
According to officials, no cleanup was required as a result of this spill.
The exact amount of chemical spilled is unknown but is not believed to be a significant amount.
According to Hazmat Officials on scene, the public is not in any danger as a result of this incident, however two Linden Fire Department members had difficulty breathing so they were transported to Rahway Hospital as a precautionary measure.
Officials thanked the Linden Fire Department, Union County Hazmat, and Union County Police Department for their help during this incident.
