Car Bursts into Flames After Elizabeth Crash; Bystanders Rescue Occupants

Elizabeth

A fiery car collision that left two people injured is being investigated as a possible street racing incident, authorities in Elizabeth said Tuesday.

The three-car crash occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. Monday in the 800 block of Elizabeth Avenue according to authorities.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the two cars were reportedly racing on Elizabeth Avenue when one of the vehicles struck the other vehicle driven by 29-year-old Rafi Delacruz from Elizabeth.

Police said Delacruz’s vehicle then crashed into a parked vehicle which then proceeded to move forward rear-ending another parked car.

According to witnesses, several people in the area exited their homes after hearing a loud bang then noticed one of the cars on fire.

Several people rushed to the vehicle to rescue Delacruz and a passenger from the car.

According to police, both occupants were transported to University Hospital in Newark where they are currently in stable condition after suffering non-life threatening injuries.

Police charged Delacruz with failure to possess registration, reckless driving, and racing.
