Camden Man sentenced to Nearly Three Decades in Prison for a Series of Rapes

Camden

A Camden man was sentenced to nearly three decades in prison for a string of rapes in 2012, Camden County Prosecutor's Office announced today.

Superior Court Judge Michele Fox sentenced 21-year-old Kevin Cleveland of Camden to 28-years incarceration in a hearing Friday.

Cleveland must serve 85 percent of that sentence before he is eligible for parole. He will also have his name added to the state’s Megan’s Law list of sex offenders, will be subject to parole supervision for life and may be subject to potential civil commitment after his prison term ends if he is found to be a sexually violent predator.

Cleveland pleaded guilty in March to three counts of first degree kidnapping, three counts of first degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree robbery and second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose before the Honorable Michele M. Fox, J.S.C.

Cleveland admitted in court to the following incidents:

January 2, 2012 robbery of a woman in Farnham Park. This woman was not sexually assaulted

January 17, 2012 – sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl while armed with a handgun in Farnham Park in Camden.

January 22, 2012 – sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman while armed with a gun in Farnham Park in Camden.

February 11, 2012 – sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl in Farnham Park. He threatened to stab her, left her naked in the park for a period of time, then returned and sexually assaulted her again.

Cleveland addressed the Court during the sentencing and apologized to the victims.

Two of the victims spoke as well.

“I have come a long way with the love and support of my family,” said one girl, who was 16 at the time of the attack. “But I fear walking alone in the dark, and my home is Camden but I will never be able to ride or walk anywhere near that area where I was violated.”

Another girl addressed Cleveland directly.

“Now today two years later I’m over the fear you gave me and I know now to always watch out for people like you,” she said.
