Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson announced a Camden man has been convicted in connection with a 2011 homicide as well as a home-invasion robbery and sexual assault.
A jury found John Gonzalez, 20, guilty yesterday of felony murder and weapons offenses in the death of 38-year-old Lori Breiding of Camden.
Gonzalez and a co-defendant, Steven Alicea, 23, of Camden, are accused of fatally shooting Breiding while attempting to rob her on the 2600 block of Cramer Street in Camden around 11:30 p.m. on September 30, 2011.
The victim succumbed to her injuries and died on October 1, 2011.
Gonzalez and Alicea were arrested shortly after Breiding’s shooting after they committed a second crime, a home invasion robbery and sexual assault near the scene of the homicide. The jury convicted Gonzalez of aggravated sexual assault, burglary, armed robbery, and weapons offenses relating to the home-invasion.
Both Gonzalez and Alicea were still wearing clothes that matched the description of those worn by Breiding’s assailants. Both were carrying .22 caliber revolvers. Breiding was shot with a .22 caliber round. Breiding’s purse was found at the residence where the home-invasion occurred.
Gonzalez, who was 16 at the time of the crimes, was waived to adult court in both cases. He is scheduled to be sentenced in April.
A trial date for Alicea is scheduled for April 4.
