An early afternoon crash that sent a man to the hospital had a set of passerbys and a Union County Officer jump into action to save the victim that was trapped.
The crash happened at the intersection of Union Avenue and Mount Vernon Avenue at around 1:35 p.m. when according to eyewitnesses, a car ran a red light and collided with a Trail Blazer which overturned, pinning the driver's arm under the vehicle eyewitnesses said.
Seconds after the crash caused the vehicle to overturn, several bystanders began to lift the car to free the man, which then allowed the off-duty Union County Officer to crawl into the vehicle in an effort to stablize the driver.
Swiftly responding Irvington firefighters believing that they had multiple pinned victims after arriving to see the officer inside the vehicle, (patiently assisting the victim) began to use tools to extricate the pair.
Crews later learned that the officer was providing assistance to the injured victim.
EMS transported the victim to the hospital where his injuries were not reported to be life threatening.
The crash is under investigation by Irvington Police.
