Authorities in Newark are searching for several suspects involved in the carjacking of an off-duty East Orange police officer early Saturday morning.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, the incident occurred around 4:37 a.m. near Broadway and 2nd Avenue.
The off-duty officer was driving when his vehicle was rear-ended at the intersection.
Director Frage said as he exited his car to assess the damage, he was confronted by three masked men, all armed, who demanded his car keys and personal belongings.
It is not clear if the officer’s service weapon was inside the vehicle.
The suspects then entered the officer’s vehicle and fled the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.
Newark police are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the suspects.
