Brutally Cold Temperatures In Northern New Jersey; Windchills Making it Feel Like -20 Degrees

Elizabeth New Jersey

WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST THIS MORNING... * HAZARD TYPES...HAZARDOUS WIND CHILLS. * WIND CHILL...AS LOW AS 15 TO 23 BELOW

* IMPACTS...DANGEROUS COLD TO THOSE VENTURING OUTSIDE INCLUDING PETS AND LIVESTOCK. PROLONGED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE FROSTBITE. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROSTBITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.

Here are some ways to stay warm:

If your feet, hands, and other parts of your body get wet from snow or rain, head back inside and change into a warm, dry alternative.

Hypothermia comes from wearing wet clothing that you stay in in the cold.

Try to keep moving as much as possible. Staying still too long will get you colder quicker. Your winter gear must be meant for winter, not for any other time of the year. Wool is the best type of clothing that will wick away moisture and keep you warm the longest, even if it itches like crazy! Any clothing that is wet when you come in from outside, hang up to dry immediately or put by a heater. Don't leave them in a pile, otherwise they'll never dry.
