Emergency responders are on the scene of a crash that has fatal injuries reported at this time in Union.
The crash happened at around 2:30 PM in the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway just at the Union Toll Plaza.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found a car crashed into one of the concrete barriers of the tollbooth with a female occupant suffering severe injuries after the vehicle burst into flames. Three other vehicles involved in the crash were located in close proximity to the toll booth.
The victim was transported to an area hospital where authorities say the unidentified woman succumb to her injuries.
Expect heavy traffic in the northbound lanes of the highway as state police are working the scene.
UPDATE: (7:38 p.m.)Officials said the deceased driver - only described as an elderly woman - appears to have crashed into two vehicles then crashed into the Garden State Parkway toll booth barrier between lanes 4 and 5. Responding Union officer pulled a woman out and with the assistance of troopers, she was moved away from the accident scene, where they began CPR. According to officials, the woman succumbed to her injuries. One other person was transported to the the the hospital with minor injuries. A third patient refused treatment.
