UPDATE 6:31 p.m. This is a confirmed homicide investigation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office on the lead.
An armed man unloaded nearly two dozen rounds of gunfire on a street in Newark’s West Ward, striking at least one person this evening.
Police officials requested a citywide response to shots fired near 186 South 8th Street around 5:06 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found scores of shell casings and an unidentified person suffering bullet wounds.
The victim’s condition is being reported as life-threatening/severe at this time.
The suspect who sprayed the area with bullets fled the scene and is at large.
Police are continuing to search for other possible victims.
Avoid the area for the investigation.
