A three-alarm fire at an housing complex in North Plainfield caused fatal injuries to two people this afternoon according to initial reports at the scene.
Heavy fire ripped through the roof of one of the buildings located in the 400 block of Route 22 (North Regency Apartments) shortly before 1 p.m. sending firefighters from several municipalities to the scene where they fought intense flames and thick smoke to get inside one of the residences where neighbors said an elderly couple was possibly trapped inside.
Crews beat down flames before making an entrance into an apartment where two people were found dead according to reports.
Firefighters have knocked down much of the flames but still have not placed the blaze under control as of 1:20 p.m.
The identity of the victims have not been released at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
