A raging 4-alarm fire that is ripping through an apartment building in Summit has dozens of firefighters on the scene at this time.
According to preliminary reports, firefighters responded to reports of a fire with possible trapped occupants at 125 Summit Avenue just before 5:25 a.m. where they raced to the scene to find the multiple-story building engulfed in flames.
Several occupants were self-evacuating from the structure as crews pushed their ways inside to search for trapped occupants.
Multiple EMS units responded for non-life threatening injuries.
Heavy fire ripped through the roof of the building as firefighters attempted to bring the blaze under control as of 5:52 a.m.
According to officials, 12 families were displaced with two victims hospitalized.
Crews brought the blaze under control by 7:15 a.m.
The Summit Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Summit Police Department and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad.
Assistance for the five alarm fire was provided by Union County Mutual Aid with Millburn, Springfield, Mountainside, Union, Fanwood, New Providence, Kenilworth, Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights, and Roselle Park fire departments responded.
The American Red Cross is providing support for evacuated families.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Summit Fire Department Investigation Unit.
