There is a homicide investigation underway in a neighborhood in Newark as detectives search for evidence after a shooting left a child dead early this morning.
Gunfire erupted in the teen's block of South 19th Street at around 1:20 a.m. sending police to the scene where a search of the area had officers finding a person inside a house unconscious and unresponsive suffering a gunshot injury.
According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the victim was rushed to University Hospital where they died a short time later.
Neighbors in the area are reporting that the victim is a male child who is around the age of 10.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a bullet entered the child's residence from the street, but authorities have not confirmed at this time.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
There were no other injuries reported.
