City and County authorities are investigating an overnight shooting that involved a police officer in Newark and ended in at least one fatality.
Police have not released many details regarding the incident, but according to preliminary reports, an off-duty officer from an outside agency (Jersey City PD) opened fire, with his service weapon, at several men in the vicinity of 195 South 6th Street -near 13th Avenue- at around 11:30 p.m. during an incident that's reported as an armed robbery.
There are two confirmed fatalities according to authorities.
EMS transported at least one person to University Hospital in an unknown condition.
It is not clear if the fatally injured suspects were armed with a weapon at this time.
There were no immediate reports of injured police officers.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will handle the investigation.
UPDATE 7:05 pm A weapon was recovered from the scene according to authorities.
