BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Man Wanted for Newark Ironbound Jewelry Store Robbery, Carjacking Captured in Virginia

Authorities in Newark are reporting the arrest of a man who was wanted for a violent armed robbery and carjacking in Newark's Ironbound section in early December.

According to authorities, **Orlando Nieves, 29, of Newark,** was arrested for the Friday, December 1, 2016, incident.

Police said residents believed in the 3rd Precinct Community Service Officers and provided Nieves’ identity enabling Major Crimes detectives to secure a $250,000.00 arrest warrant.

Nieves was apprehended yesterday in Virginia by members of the U.S. Marshals Service.

According to police, on December 1st, at approximately 11:44 a.m., Newark Police responded to a call of a robbery in progress at Vinhas Jewelers Inc., located at 197 Ferry Street.

A male suspect entered the store and asked the salesperson to see some gold chains.

Police said while looking at the chains, the suspect pointed a gun at the clerk and placed the chains in his fanny pack before leaving the store.

The suspect also fired the gun in the direction of the store owner when he noticed that he was following him.

He then carjacked a beige 2006 Nissan Altima, which was later found abandoned near the intersection of Somme Street and Raymond Boulevard.

Nieves is charged with Robbery, Carjacking, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
