There is an active investigation underway into the motive for a shooting that left a man dead this morning on a Newark West Ward street.
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. in the 300 block of Sandford Avenue where a ShotsSpotter activation led police officers to the West Ward community.
Units arriving at the scene found a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head at that location according to reports.
The unidentified male was pronounced dead a short time later.
Newark Police set up a crime scene while investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office made their way to the area.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time.
