BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Firefighter Injured in 2-Alarm Tire Shop Fire

EMS transported a firefighter to University Hospital suffering injuries after a fire ripped through a tire shop in Newark's North Ward this evening.

Heavy fire and several explosions broke out at The Velez Tire Shop located in the single digit block of Park Avenue just before 9 p.m. sending crews to the scene where they observed flames shooting from the structure upon their arrival.

Firefighters battled the intense fire that tore through the single-story structure according to fire officials.

The injured firefighter reportedly suffered serious facial burns and was admitted by doctors at the hospital.

As of 9:50 p.m. crews continued to knock down hot spots inside the structure and have not placed the blaze under control.

The cause remains under investigation.

UPDATE 10:12 p.m. NFD: The 2-Alarm fire engulfed the tire shop at 9::01 p.m.

One firefighter was trapped inside of the building officials said.

Crews located the firefighter then rushed him to University Hospital. There are no known civilian injuries or casualties at this time.
