BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Fatal Motorcycle Crash Victim was Newark Recreation Department Life Guard

Newark

A fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on Route 280 in Newark has authorities investigating.

According to residents in Newark’s West Ward, they identified the victim as Newark resident Clarence Hickson who was in his late 30’s.

According to a spokesperson for the NJ State Police, the crash happened at around 1:38 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Route 280 near mile marker 13.

The spokesperson said, Hickson, 32 of Newark, was operating a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle, collided with a 2012 Nissan Maxima that was occupied by an adult and two juveniles in the center lane of exit 13 at 1st Street in Newark.

"As a result of the collision, Hickson was ejected from the motorcycle" the spokesperson said.

Hickson was rushed to University Hospital where he died at around 2:01 a.m. The driver and passengers of the Nissan were not injured the spokesperson said.

Residents remembered Hickson as a life guard who worked for the city’s recreation department and frequented The Boylan Street Recreation Center where they said he served the city for about a half dozen years.

“He was the coolest young man and alway helpful” said a sobbing woman who was standing in front of the Boylan Street location.

“I just came here to be alone and shed a tear for Hickson. He loved the “heck” out of his kids and city youths. All he wanted to do is swim and ride his motorcycle”, the woman concluded.

Residents said Hickson did have young children but could not verify exactly how many.
