The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken the lead in an investigation into a deadly shooting in Newark's South Ward overnight.
A preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 10:54 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired near 58 Stengel Avenue.
When cops arrived, they requested EMS to rush to the scene after they found a male victim suffering bullet wounds at that location.
Medical personnel pronounced the unidentified person dead a short time later.
The shooting marks the second homicide in Newark in less than 24 hours, and over a half dozen individuals who were shot in less than 36 hours.
At approximately 5:27 a.m., officials at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark called police when a male entered the emergency room suffering bullet wounds.
Police are currently trying to ascertain the location where this person was shot.
All of the shootings are under investigation.
No arrests have been made.
