There is an active investigation underway into a double fatal crash that killed two 19-year-olds on Saturday morning from New Jersey in Delaware.

According to a statement released by Delaware authorities, the violent crash happened in the northbound lanes of U.S. 13 in the Bear area at around 10:15 a.m.

Police say, Mr. Adrian Velazquez of Kearney, New Jersey, and the back-left passenger, Mr. Alfahtee Heuy from Hillside New Jersey, were both pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the crash.

Valazquez was a 2017 Rutgers Newark Soccer player in the position of defender according to Rutgers Newark website site.

According to a preliminary investigation, Delaware State Police said, Velazquez was driving a 2003 Toyota Avalon northbound on U.S. 13 in the left lane when his car veered into the right lane and then off of the east edge of the road into the grass.

The vehicle then continued on the grass until it hit "a small rise in the ground," which caused the car to go airborne police said.

The car landed in thick brush and trees before coming to a stop when it struck a large tree.

According to police Velazquez was wearing a seat belt, and impairment does not seem to be a factor, but authorities are not sure as to why the car drifted off the road.

Police say Heuy was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the car.

A second passenger, 20, from Howell, New Jersey, also not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car, police said.

The Howell resident landed a short distance from the car and is now under the care of Doctors at Christiana Hospital in critical condition police said.

A puppy found in the vehicle was also pronounced dead according to police.

Authorities believe that the occupants of the vehicle were heading back to NJ after going to pick up the dog.

The investigation is ongoing.
