Commuters traveling on McCarter Highway (NJ-21) near Tichenor Street in Newark’s East Ward should expect heavy delays as police report a pedestrian strike that has left one person dead.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the fatality and stated that detectives are on their way to the scene to lead the investigation.
The incident occurred around 3:25 p.m.
Drivers are advised to use Broad Street as an alternative route to avoid the extremely heavy traffic.
However, expect significant delays on Broad Street as businesses and schools are beginning to let out.
Avoid Route 21 if possible.
