There is a large crime scene established near a section of Newark’s South Ward as police are investigating a shooting with injured victims at this time.
According to police, at approximately 8:05 p.m., a gunman sprayed the area of 178 Lehigh Avenue with nearly two dozen rounds of bullets in which several struck an elderly woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say at least one other victim was found suffering non-fatal injuries, but they expect other victims to show up at the hospital.
A ShotSpotter device detected about 29 rounds of gunfire at the scene. Police say they found ballistic evidence in the vicinity of 251-253 Lehigh as well.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been activated and are en route to the scene to lead the investigation.
